A way to check if a D2G is unlocked without a SIM card?

A friend of mine (from the USA) proxy-bought a D2G for me, which was stated to be unlocked by the seller.

Is there a way to check if it was actually unlocked without a non-Verizon/Vodafone SIM?

The service code #073887* still requests the unlock code even for already unlocked devices, I have verified that with people from another forum.
